4th Gen (1992+) Econoline Rear Barn Door Latch Cable UPGRADE

Here’s some shots I took while replacing the cables in the rear cargo doors of my ’97 Ford E150 Clubwagon with these throttle cable style ones I found on ebay.

Things to note:

– I’ve done the replacement cable ends. Install was fine and they’re ok. Read below for reasons why they’re not great.

– I like the double nut design for one simple reason: I’ve replaced the cables and cable ends before and the latches aren’t made of the sturdiest metal. It’s a little soft and likes to open pretty easily. As a result, I had zip tied previous fixes in place. Never felt great about it. This design will clamp down on the bracket nice and tight. You COULD get crazy with washers and some blue loc-tite (didn’t think of it myself at the time).

– This design also allows for some length adjustment. Not really necessary but nice to have with the soft metal mentioned above. After 436k miles on my van, I’ll take all the flexibility I can get.

– They’re impossible to install unless you remove the latch and inner handle. This makes it MUCH easier to do anyway on your workbench.

– I also installed a later E-van handle/bracket/plate housing with a built in backup camera. Very slight mod to the door with tin snips but bolted up just fine. Be sure to paint your cuts to prevent rust. I tow a lot so aligning my hitch is a breeze now. I already had an aftermarket radio with camera input. Otherwise I might have skipped this.
